Buying quality microphones comfortably from your home

A good microphone is the first requirement to create quality audio recordings, as the voices and music that will create the final result of your multimedia production will be captured by this fundamental device. Using a professional microphone with a good frequency response and a good signal-to-noise ratio is essential not only when playing live, but also to achieve recordings with an optimum level, making post-production editing much easier to 'clean' tracks and optimise volume.

Auna microphones meet high-quality standards and are characterized by their ease of use and handling. To meet your needs we provide different types of microphones suitable for all situations; whether you need a wireless microphone, a condenser microphone, or perhaps a complete set to use in your studio and including accessories such as arms, table holders, anti-pop filters or stands, auna offers you a wide range of products with many features and an excellent standard of quality. Take a look at our product gallery, and discover the solution that best meets your needs, taking advantage of our offers and getting excellent value for the money you spend.

Studio microphones for professional recordings

Studio microphones are based on sophisticated technologies and can be used in many situations. Whether you are recording vocals, radio plays or podcast, they allow for excellent results. For example, we offer large-diaphragm condenser microphones with gold vaporized microphone capsules. These products offer especially wide frequency responses as well as excellent dynamics. Such models are perfect for people with the highest possible standards for their studio microphone. Functional pop screens filter out background noise and a table tripod ensures high levels of comfort. Our available studio microphones also have a top-notch aesthetic design: among others, we are offering variations in extravagant gold, striking blue and exquisite silver. The product offering also includes variants in classic black to ensure that the right studio microphone is available for all tastes.

Condenser microphone: the essential choice for your recording studio

The condenser microphone is one of the most sensitive and defined audio capture devices on the market today, essential in all radio and recording studios to capture all the nuances of voice and instruments in live recordings. This type of professional microphone stands out for the extremely accurate way it records the audio it receives. To work, it requires a connection to the power supply, usually via phantom power supply (also called +48V), usually provided by the sound card or mixer desk. When it’s switched on, the microphone stores electricity on two small plates located inside: the diaphragm, located at the front, and a second metal plate, located just behind the diaphragm.

When sound waves reach the microphone diaphragm, it vibrates and converts its capacity into an audio signal. This process causes the condenser microphone to pick up a sound that is more faithful to the original, with superior detail and quality than traditional dynamic microphones. For this reason, it is used in studios and situations where it is essential that the sound quality is at the highest level, such as a radio recording or podcast for example. As the condenser microphone requires a good power supply, both to power it and to send the audio signal to the sound card, using quality cables is a must. If you use accessories made from poorly made materials, you run the risk of bringing too much power into the microphone and thus losing recording quality: for this reason, cables and connectors must be of good brand to ensure the best performance of the device.

Auna provides you with wide diaphragm condenser microphones with vaporized gold microphone capsules, with particularly wide frequency responses and excellent dynamics. These models are perfect for those looking for the highest standards in a microphone, and are available with either a traditional cannon or built-in USB output, making it easy to connect directly to your computer if you don't have a sound card. Anti-pop filters eliminate background noise, while the adjustable table holders provide high levels of comfort. Our condenser microphones also have a first-class aesthetic design, with gold, blue and silver and classic black variants to ensure the microphone is pleasing to the eye as well as the ear.

Wireless microphone: extreme freedom of movement on stage

Microphone cables can turn into a real jungle that limits the freedom of movement of musicians on stage. With a wireless microphone, captured audio signals are sent over the air to a receiver which then transmits them to PA system, eliminating the need for cables on stage. A wireless microphone, or radio microphone, is therefore very useful when maximum flexibility and freedom of movement is needed, and they are therefore ideal for events in many situations, including schools, gyms, open areas and places of worship.

A wireless microphone consists of a transmitter, handheld when integrated into the microphone or body pack when contained in an external box to be attached to clothes, instruments or other accessories and a receiver, which processes the signal and transmits it to the amplifier. Thanks to two antennas, the receivers of the wireless microphones of our line allow to minimize the interference generated by the signal bouncing against the walls; the reception is made using the VHF frequency band, and is guaranteed within a radius of 50 meters.

Some tips to choose the right microphone

.
  • Choose the microphone according to the sound you want to record
First, you need to know the concept of sound source, i.e. any sound-generating element that can be captured and that you will use in the final mix. Make a note of your sound sources and how many microphones you need. Do you want to record voices, instruments or ambient sounds? Will you need one, or more pieces? Which sounds do you need to discard, and which ones are you going to keep in the final mix?

  • Choose the right directionality
Knowing the directionality of the microphone makes it easier to capture only the sound you want, and it is essential to have a basic understanding of the existing terminology for defining a microphone, based on its polar diagram. To make an analogy with images, the polar diagram is the "focal length" of the sound, or in other words the microphone's pick-up angle, based on level, direction, frequency, and other factors. In general, there are three types of microphone: omnidirectional, bidirectional and directional, the latter being commonly used in audiovisual recording. Omnidirectional microphones respond by capturing sound from all directions, while bidirectional microphones capture front and back sound by means of a membrane that vibrates in two opposite directions.
The cardioid model is equivalent to a wide angle, and its capture range is shaped like a heart - hence the name. Super cardioid models allow a more distant pick-up, by closing the 180º pick-up angle and rejecting lateral sounds. If you want to point the microphone at the mouth of one or more speakers, this is ideal. Some models close the pickup angle even further, and they are called hyper cardioids.

  • Check sensitivity and sound pressure level
Sensitivity and SPL are two sides of the same coin that tell us about decibels or the "volume" that the microphone is able to pick up. The lower the value, the more sensitive it will be, capturing quieter sounds. SPL - an acronym for Sound Pressure Level - is the opposite concept to sensitivity. This factor is particularly important when recording sounds that cause a lot of noise: an acceptable SPL microphone will capture every detail of the explosion, while a sub-optimal level will "cut" the sound. Also, in a whispered scene, if the sensitivity of the microphone is not low enough, you won't be able to hear what is being said.

  • Choose a microphone with a correct response curve
Will the microphone be able to pick up bass sounds? Is it more suitable for high or medium pitched voices? Knowing how the microphone responds to certain frequencies is crucial, as some microphones work better at frequencies close to the human voice, while others have a boost in the bass pickup and can more easily reach bass sounds. Check the response curve of the microphone to see what it's best suited for. For example, a microphone with peaks above low frequencies is ideal for recording shock, motor or ambient sounds. If it shows peaks in the mid-high frequencies, it’s perfect to recording voices, while the treble is recommended for metal, glass, etc. sounds.
Some microphones become deeper as you get closer; this is a well-known fact for condenser microphones, but it also occurs to a lesser extent for dynamic microphones. Consider this, because getting too close, or staying too far away from the microphone, will make a voice sound different.

  • Go for the quality standard you will actually use
There are many factors that define a microphone and are easy to understand. But price and quality don't have to go hand in hand, considering there comes a time when the price goes up a lot to give slightly higher performance. When you're about to buy a microphone, ask yourself if you're really going to use this quality. In our online shop you will find several microphones that will meet more than your expectations, whether you are demanding or more modest.
